What's new?

10 August 2006:

British Sign Language (BSL) pages
The site now contains information for Deaf People in a series of video clips in British Sign Language. The video clips can all be downloaded on broadband or by dial-up internet, and can be viewed using either Windows Media Player or QuickTime. English text appears below each video clip. Deaf People have been involved throughout this project.
There are approximately 1,350 Deaf British Sign Language users in Leeds, which is higher than the national average. Research has shown that about 25% of hearing people are likely to go through a mental health problem. For Deaf and hard of hearing people this rises to 40%. As many as 50% of profoundly Deaf people are likely to go through a mental health crisis. Many Deaf People feel very isolated and have faced discrimination such as not being allowed to use sign language. British Sign Language is the first language of many Deaf People, which means they have often received a poor education in English. For many people this means it is difficult to understand important information in English. Using British Sign Language helps to bring information to people who may have been very isolated before.
We intend to add several more video clips within the next few months.
We are now also working on a project to add audio clips of information in several spoken community languages to the website.'

December 2005:

Winner - national mental health award
Information for Mental Health has won the 2005 NIMHE Award (National Institute for Mental Health in England), Voluntary Sector category, for the development of Leeds Mental Health Directory. The emphasis of the award is for partnership work.
The Directory was developed by IMH in partnership with service users, survivors and carers, local voluntary sector organisations, Leeds Mental Health trust, the five Leeds Primary Care Trusts, Leeds Mental health Trust, Leeds Social Services, and a number of people who belong to none of the above.
The Directory includes:-

  • this website
  • How are you feeling? poster and leaflet aimed at people outside mental health services

  • Quick Guide, compact directory specifically for service users and carers

  • Resources directory & guide - comprehensive directory for activists and professionals

  • Information while you are in hospital - for people on psychiatric hospital wards

  • We are delighted with the recognition this award gives to the Directory, to IMH, and to the central importance of information in mental health. We would like to thank all the many people who helped create Leeds Mental Health Directory. 14 February 2005:

For easier access the following Black and Minority Ethnic Group keywords have been re-arranged so that they all start with the initials BME: African / Caribbean; Asian, South; Asian, South East; Chinese; Irish; Jews.

    1st September 2004:

We are working on putting information, in British Sign Language, on to this website. We would like to know what kind of information is most important for Deaf people. If you are Deaf, or work with Deaf members or clients, please fill in our questionnaire - http://www.mentalhealthleeds.info/bsl.php - by Friday 22nd October.

    24th August 2004:

Two new keywords have been added to the keyword search list - 'Debt' and 'Travellers'.

    27th May 2004:

We are very pleased to say that this site has been accepted as an 'A-site' by the National Library for the Blind. This means that the site is considered very accessible to visually impaired people.

    29th March 2004:

Several new accessibility features have been added to the site. Those who need to turn off accesskeys can now do so, while the auto-skiplink feature will automatically load a page at its content section, skipping past the navigation menu without the need to choose the skiplink every time.

Unfortunately, these features (as with the stylesheet switcher) do require that cookies are allowed in your browser - but there's not much we can do about that!

Furthermore, in an effort to simplify the accesskeys in use on the site we are now sticking to the UK government standard for accesskeys.
